The Ethics and Religious Culture program in force since 2008 in Quebec schools is now being reconsidered by the province’s ministry for education and higher learning (the ministre de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur). The program will be replaced by new program that will eventually cover the following topics: citizen participation and democracy, legal education, eco-citizenship, education on sexuality, self-development and interpersonal relationships, ethics, digital citizenship and the culture of societies. Can these disparate topics be articulated within the same program? We think that this is possible on condition that ethics be its central focus and, with it, the ethical quest to live together through dialogue. We also believe that respect for human dignity as envisioned by this program is a promising avenue for study.
