Discours et identité à Iqaluit après l’avènement du Nunavut

Examining the results of interviews conducted in Iqaluit in 2003 with 35 Inuit individuals, this article attempts at shedding some light on the perceptions of respondents concerning the language situation in the North after the advent of Nunavut. It tries to answer two questions: 1) Do people believe that the practical value of Inuktitut—as a tool giving access to social and political power, the labour market and the external world—has increased (or been increasing) since the creation of Nunavut? 2) Do respondents think that language behaviour (more particularly the choice between Inuktitut and English) has changed or should be changing now that Nunavut is in existence? The analysis of interviews leads us to conclude that an alternative linguistic market, within which Inuktitut enjoys a strongly positive value, has now appeared in Iqaluit.

En examinant les résultats d’entrevues effectuées à Iqaluit en 2003 avec 35 personnes d’origine inuit, cet article tente de mettre en lumière les perceptions des répondants quant à la situation langagière dans le Nord après la création du Nunavut. L'article cherche à répondre à deux questions principales: 1) Croit-on que la valeur pratique de l’inuktitut — en tant qu’outil donnant accès au pouvoir social et politique, au marché du travail et au monde extérieur — a augmenté (ou est en voie d’augmentation) depuis la création du Nunavut? 2) Pense-t-on que le comportement langagier (plus particulièrement le choix entre l’inuktitut et l’anglais) a changé ou devrait changer suite à l’avènement du Nunavut? L'analyse des entrevues permet de conclure à l'apparition à Iqaluit d'un marché linguistique alternatif au sein duquel l'inuktitut possède une valeur fortement positive.
