While research in the scientific community requires a recognized protocol, creation, on the other hand, considers that subjectivity is a valid source of knowledge. In the case of sound appreciation, and with this duality in mind, I will examine the compositional process of Mynes, an example of a “work-in-the-present” for string trio and orchestra composed and first performed in 2007. In the first part of the article, moments tagged as authentic in the process of composition are given themes, such as early piano improvisations, choice of a title, or collective improvisation by the string trio confronted to the orchestra. In the second half, compositional techniques such as passages linking one chord to another (particularly through improvisation), elliptical formal features, and sections that are “designed to be heard” are examined.
