André Rehbinder, « Langage, πρᾶξις et être dans la réfutation d’Hermogène (Cratyle, 385a1-390e4) », Dialogues d'histoire ancienne, ID : 10670/1.4114sj
This paper studies two argumentative steps of Hermogenes’ refutation in the Cratylus, which are the identification of the praxis to a kind of being, and the identification of language to a praxis (386e6-387c4). The paper tries to show which dialectical means is used for the first of these identifications, and then how it is justified by Socrates’ examples of cutting and burning, which belong to medical practice. Finally, the paper tries to define the vision of the language that its identification to praxis implies while showing its main difference from Cratylus’ vision, which Socrates refutes in the final part of the dialogue.
