L’économie des grandes institutions culturelles est-elle maîtrisable? L’histoire de l’Opéra de Paris conduit à se poser la question. Le coût marginal d’un spectacle est égal au revenu marginal qu’il génère. Les coûts variables par représentation tendent à diminuer alors que les recettes de billetterie augmentent. Les explications de cette évolution ressemblent aux grandes innovations en matière de taille, de technologie, d’organisation et de gestion qui ont pris naissance en milieu industriel.
