The Ethical and Political Expertise of Dandamis and Calanus, the Indian Advisers of King Alexander Four Greek writers of the Roman Imperial period, Strabo, Plutarch, Arrian, and Palladius rewrote the story of a meeting between Alexander or his messenger and two Indian experts, Calanus and Dandamis. I first study the terms which the four authors use to define the social category and the function of these experts. The advice they would had given to Alexander is then analyzed, advice where political criticism of the excesses of imperialism is superimposed on an ethical thought on the need for a sovereign as for any man to control his passions. Finally, I consider the impact of this advice.

Quatre auteurs grecs de l’époque impériale, Strabon, Plutarque, Arrien et Palladios ont réécrit le récit d’un entretien entre Alexandre ou son envoyé et deux experts indiens, Calanos et Dandamis. Nous étudions d’abord les termes que ces auteurs emploient pour définir la catégorie sociale et la fonction de ces experts. Nous analysons ensuite les conseils qu’ils auraient donnés à Alexandre, conseils dans lesquels la critique politique des dérives de l’impérialisme se superpose à une réflexion éthique sur la nécessité pour un souverain comme pour tout homme de maîtriser ses passions. Nous nous interrogeons pour finir sur la portée de ces conseils.
