A thorough investigation of Michel Vautrot, a very popular French referee, allows to get to the heart of the mutation of football refereeing in France, during the second half of the 20th centuries. This director of the game, who is from Besançon, is a famous International referee of whom the biography has surprisingly never been done before. He appears in the press as a humanist referee, by having empathy with players and a good understanding of the game spirit. This biography permits to show the progressive construction of his emblematic career, through four main periods. From 1959 to 1970, Michel Vautrot starts to be a referee. His childhood, between sickness, not being allowed to do sport, and an education in a rural environment, enhance our understanding of his singularity, which will characterise him later. Then, from 1970 to 1975, he appears in the high level, which gives him a wider visibility in the mass media. Michel Vautrot becomes famous at the national level and his image of being a competent referee is starting to grow. From 1975 to 1982, a particular refereeing style, in the spirit of the game, with psychology, close to the players and the press, appears truly through him. Michel Vautrot is then represented as one of the best French referees and becomes popular internationally. Finally, from 1982 to 1991, he figures as one of the model of refereeing, with his own norms of managing the players, a charisma and an experience which allow him to officiate in the big European and World events.
