Résumé 0

Violations of protocols of war and laws during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913)At the beginning of the 20th century, nationalistic passions exploded in the Balkans during a span of two wars, highlighting the impossibility for peoples of that region to live together and to overcome their mutual hatred. Passions released by these conflicts led to situations of extreme violence in which no dialogue or compromise was possible. Deportations or exterminations of minorities were the only means these nationalistic groups knew in order to set up the ethnic unity of which they dreamed, and these events were transformed into a model for the entire century. In short, the two Balkan wars proved that the development of an international humanitarian law was categorically opposed to the two principles that brought these nations to war : the absolute sovereignty of each nation and the will of each nation to annihilate the other.
