Enjeux historiques et philosophiques du paradigme spinoziste dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle

Although Spinoza’s ontology — understood here as dual monism — has constituted a major point of reference for ontological speculations for over three centuries, there is at present no work that shows the heritage of his thought in its historical continuity. Our aim, therefore, is to fill this lacuna, in particular as regards the golden age of Spinozan thought, namely the second half of the nineteenth century. Going over this history gives us the opportunity to understand the fundamental motifs of the philosophy of dual monism and its theoretical profundity. As the birth of scientific psychology is the intellectual context in which Spinoza’s thought constituted itself as a paradigm, this article seeks also to provide a base for reflection on the relationship of the history of philosophy to the history of the sciences, and on the autonomy of philosophical discourse in general (transl. J. Dudley).

Quoique l’ontologie de Spinoza — comprise ici comme un monisme duel — constitue une référence majeure des spéculations ontologiques depuis plus de trois siècles, il n’existe pas, à ce jour, de travaux montrant l’héritage de cette pensée dans sa continuité historique. Nous tâchons donc de combler cette lacune, en particulier pour ce qui concerne l’âge d’or de la pensée spinoziste : la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Retracer cette histoire est l’occasion de comprendre les motifs fondamentaux de la philosophie du monisme duel, et sa profondeur théorique. Comme la naissance de la psychologie scientifique est le contexte intellectuel dans lequel la pensée spinoziste s’est constituée en paradigme, ce travail voudrait également fournir une base pour la réflexion sur les rapports de l’histoire de la philosophie à l’histoire des sciences, et sur l’autonomie du discours philosophique en général.
