The aim of this article is to analyse the practice of translating and adapting French works for London stages during nearly half a century of the Victorian period (1843-1886). From the testimonies of playwrights, critics, actors and journalistic chronicles, it is possible to observe how the use of foreign material is conceived, at first, as an example of intellectual looting that weakens the construction of national identity around dramatic art. In a second time, as the century progresses, such « theft » or « plunder » will be conceived in positive terms, giving way to what was termed a British « renaissance » of dramatic art. In both cases, the foundation of creative activity in works originating in France will confirm what some critics have called the French cultural supremacy in the 19th century.
