Christ à l’eauThis is an invitation to revisit the work of Ernest Ménétrier (1853-1905), known under the name of Hodinos, in view of new elements that have arisen since the now ancient writing of a monography – fascicle n˚ 18 of the collection of art brut in Lausanne.A study of the drawing “Christ à l’eau”, done in ink and crayon, twenty years after the young communard’s internment, leads one to question the necessity of having recourse to a pseudo name and its fabrication ; to measure the change in opinions on the work, from psychopathological art to art brut, with, between the lines, the question of sublimation and the sinthome, according to the question raised by Lacan : “How can art, craft thwart what is imposed by the symptom ?” It requires following the movements of the work, the paths of creation of Hodinos, the medal engraver’s inscriptions. And, above all, it raises the question of how this work cries out to us.
