Initialement conçu pour l’enfance malade, l’hôpital Estefânia de Lisbonne ouvre en 1878, vingt ans après sa fondation, comme établissement pour patients adultes. La création compliquée de cet établissement couvre une période particulièrement riche de l’histoire hospitalière portugaise. Dans un pays marqué par une progressive laïcisation de l’assistance et à une époque où les pouvoirs publics manifestent un intérêt croissant pour les questions de protection de l’enfance, des arguments moraux et sanitaires militent en faveur de l’hospitalisation séparée des plus jeunes. Mais la crise hospitalière que connaît alors la capitale portugaise (manque de lits, vétusté des structures, mélange des pathologies) engage tout un débat sur la taille, l’emplacement et la conception des hôpitaux. Si l’urgence des besoins empêche la création d’un établissement exclusivement pédiatrique, l’ouverture d’un service réservé aux enfants dans l’hôpital Estefânia marque néanmoins le début de l’hospitalisation infantile au Portugal.

Royal Charity and Hospital Crisis : The’Impossible’ Creation of a Hospital for Children in Lisbon (1858-1878). Although originally foreseen for sick children, the Lisbon Estefânia Hospital opened in 1878, twenty years after its foundation, as an institution for adults. The complex creation of this hospital reflects an extremely rich period in Portuguese hospital history. In a country marked by a progressive secularisation of public services such as assistance, and at a time when public authorities showed increasing interest in childhood protection issues, questions of morality and hygiene encouraged a separate hospital for the youngest patients. However the city hospitals of the Portuguese capital were also in the middle of a crisis (lack of beds, obsolete structures, a mixing up of certain pathologies), which gave rise to a vigorous debate concerning the size, location and design of their facilities. Although the urgency of needs prevented the creation of an exclusively pediatric hospital, the opening of a service reserved for children at the Estefânia hospital marked the starting point of pediatric hospitalisation in Portugal.
