Je fais retour sur la façon dont je suis devenu historien et romancier, en distinguant les pratiques et les finalités de ces deux activités. Mes romans s’inscrivent non pas dans la soumission de résultats à la communauté scientifique sur la base de procédures partagées, mais dans l’espace de la production de littérature française contemporaine. Ils participent d’un secteur éditorial et artistique bien précis, qui possède une certaine autonomie, a une histoire, n’est pas constitué par des règles aussi précisément définies que l’espace de l’histoire universitaire, connaît néanmoins une certaine organisation et hiérarchisation. Il s’agit donc d’un geste artistique, orienté, entre autres éléments, par ma profession historienne, sans s’y résumer, tout en s’inscrivant dans une économie et une histoire bien différentes de la discipline historique.

In this paper, I look back on how I became an historian and a novelist, distinguishing between the practices and final goals of both activities. My novels do not entail presenting results to the scholarly community based on shared processes; instead, they belong to contemporary French literature. They are part of a very specific publishing and artistic sector that enjoys a degree of autonomy, has its own history, is not made up of rules as clearly defined as the history discipline in academia, but nevertheless has a certain organisation and hierarchy. My novel-writing activity is therefore an artistic effort that is guided by, but cannot be reduced to, my occupation as an historian, amongst other things. It also has an economic and historical context that is very different from that of the academic field of history.
