The self-organizing consciousness This paper presents a shortened and updated version of a general model that the authors proposed in a target paper in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (2002). In sharp contrast to the standard cognitive framework, the model posits that the only representations people create and manipulate are those which form the momentary phenomenal experience. We propose that the isomorphism generally observed between these representations and the structure of the world is the end-product of a progressive organization that emerges thanks to elementary associative processes that take the conscious representations themselves as the stuff on which they operate, a thesis that we summarize in the concept of Self-Organizing Consciousness (SOC). As an illustration, we show that the SOC framework accounts for the discovery of words from a continuous speech stream, and for seemingly rule-governed behavior, including those involving some amount of abstraction from the raw sensory input. Our analysis leads to the surprising conclusion that there is no need for the concepts of unconscious representations and knowledge and, a fortiori, the notion of unconscious inferences: Conscious mental life, when considered within a dynamic perspective, could be sufficient to account for adapted behavior. This alternative framework is more parsimonious than the prevalent conceptions in cognitive and developmental sciences because it manages to account for very sophisticated behavior while respecting the important constraints inherent to the conscious/ attentional system, such as limited capacity, seriality of processing, and quick forgetting (and even takes advantage of these constraints).

Cet article présente une mise à jour, sous un format condensé, d’un modèle du fonctionnement cognitif proposé par les auteurs dans un article-cible de Behavioral and Brain Sciences en 2002. En rupture radicale avec les modèles courants de la psychologie cognitive contemporaine, ce modèle postule que les seules représentations et opérations mentales effectuées par un sujet sont celles qui constituent son expérience phénoménale momentanée. Notre proposition est que l’isomorphisme généralement observé entre ces représentations conscientes et la structure du monde est la conséquence d’une organisation qui émerge grâce à des processus associatifs élémentaires prenant les représentations conscientes elles-mêmes comme base sur laquelle opérer. Cette thèse, résumée dans le concept de «conscience autoorganisatrice», apparaît notoirement plus parcimonieuse que les modèles courants, en ce qu’elle fait l’économie de postulats relatifs à des représentations et calculs mentaux inconscients.
