Twin births and intellectual inhibition: the construction of a separate thinking space in psychoanalytical psychotherapy of the child This article presents a portion of the psychoanalytical psychotherapy carried out with a young female twin presenting intellectual inhibition before learning to read. It demonstrates the importance of archaic twin fantasies of devoration and encroachment of psychic space and their role in the defensive establishment of an obstacle hindering thinking which makes us worry that mental retardation could ensue. These fantasies were able to take shape in the potential space of therapy thanks to the use of transference, and to be the object of a transformation leading to a resumption of the symbolisation process.
