Two days after the German offensive on June 22, 1941, in Soviet Union, Vilnius was occupied. The Jewish community which amounted to 80 000 people was immediately to know a regime of terror. From mid July till the end of December, 35 000 Jews were exterminated. In the Ghetto, at the head of the Judenrat (Jewish Council), Yaacov Gens was little by little spreading his influence and for a year and a half, a lull set up and cultural activities developed. But in mid September 1943, the last 11 000 survivors of who had been the Jerusalem of Lithuania were in their turn exterminated.
