This study revisits some of the aporias in chapter 9 of book III of the Saturnalia of Macrobius, relating to the formulas of euocatio of the tutelary deities of Carthage and of deuotio of the Punic city, by Scipio Aemilianus in 146 B. C.: the identity of the “evoked” deities; the link between euocatio, the secret names of Rome and its tutelary deity; the historicity of the transfer of Tanit’s cult statue to Rome ; the authenticity and philological difficulties of the carmen euocationis; the definition of the rite of deuotio; questions raised by the list of oppida deuota provided by Macrobius.
