Résumé En Fr

Petrographic analyses were carried out at the Fitch Laboratory, Athens, on amphorae dating mainly to the late 2nd or early 1st c. BC from three Cretan sites, Knossos (a kiln site), Mochlos and Myrtos Pyrgos. The results make it possible to distinguish two sites of production: one which supplied Knossos used a sand-tempered clay of central Crete; the other, probably situated in or near ancient Hierapytna, supplied an area of eastern Crete, including Mochlos and Myrtos Pyrgos, using a clay characterized by its inclusions of volcanic rock and amphibolite. Foreign amphorae were imported, and local imitations of them were produced in both parts of the island, but there is little evidence of trade between them.
