“All equal, far reaches, no bounds”: Exploring and Redefining the American Space through Gary Snyder’s Wild Ecopoetry

Les œuvres de Snyder tentent de recréer un espace mythique et poétique américain grâce à une réconciliation syncrétique à première vue incompatible. Le mélange des références culturelles et l’expérience incarnée de l’espace américain permettent à Snyder d’esquisser un portrait de cette « Turtle Island » en nouvelle figuration de l’Anthropocène.L’intégration d’une altérité polymorphe, se manifestant à travers des liens poétiques et diachroniques entre diverses dynasties et traditions, permet à Snyder de repousser les limites du mythe américain par excellence, à savoir la Frontière, et offre alors l’image d’un espace reconfiguré, qui ne connaît pas de limites et dans lequel tous les êtres peuvent être égaux.

Snyder’s work wishes to redefine the American mythopoetic space by reconciling the alleged irreconcilable. By blending cultural references and focusing on the physical experience of the American territory, Snyder’s poetics portrays “Turtle Island” as a future transfiguration of the Anthropocene.By including a polymorphous otherness which relies on a diachronic exploration of past dynasties and traditions with a poetics of interrelatedness, Snyder pushes the boundaries of the quintessential American myth of the Frontier, thus offering the vision of a future territory that knows “no bounds” and enables all living things to be “all equal”.
