La mise en place d’un objet tel que le Père Noël nécessite, de la part des parents, une certaine légitimation lorsque les enfants découvrent qu’il n’existe pas. Ceci s’organise autour de quatre « scénarios de légitimation » dont l’un d’entre eux aborde explicitement la castration, alors qu’elle n’est présente qu’implicitement et de manière négative dans les trois autres. Or, la prépondérance, chez les parents, de ce premier scénario, qui correspond à une sorte de « prescription » fantasmatique de la castration, permet à l’enfant d’offrir à ce personnage un destin qui aboutit à une symbolisation. En revanche, lorsque ce scénario est modéré par les trois autres, on assiste chez l’enfant à une sorte d’échec de la symbolisation.

For having set up such an object as the character of Father Christmas, the parents have to give a justification, when the children have found out that there is no such being as Father Christmas. This action of legitimation is laid out by four « scenarios of legitimation », one of which explicitly refers to the concept of castration, whereas in the other three scenarios, castration is only implicitly and negatively referred to. In fact, this first scenario, which is a kind of « fantasized stipulation » of castration, when prevailing over the others in the parent’s speech, enables the child to give to this character a destiny towards symbolization. On the contrary, when this scenario is restrained by the three others, what takes place instead is a kind of failure in symbolization.
