Relire Fanon revient à le replacer dans son temps et sa position de psychiatre en situation coloniale, lui-même issu de l’empire en sa qualité de Martiniquais, et engagé dans le renversement de celui-ci au nom d’un universalisme révolutionnaire. Son œuvre demeure stimulante en ce qu’elle récuse toute interprétation culturaliste et identitaire du politique, comprend le rôle de la guerre dans le changement social, saisit l’importance de la culture matérielle et de ses techniques du corps, identifie le compromis entre « élites colonisées » et « bourgeoisie métropolitaine » sous-jacent à la colonisation et à la décolonisation. En revanche, Fanon ne se départit pas d’une appréhension essentialiste et anhistorique de la situation coloniale, ainsi que d’une vision assez pauvre de la subalternité sociale.

Re-reading Fanon means placing him back in his time and in his position as psychiatrist during the colonial situation, himself a product of the empire as a Martiniquais, engaged in the overthrow of the empire in the name of a revolutionary universalism. His works remain stimulating in that they refuse any culturalist and identitarian interpretation of the political, they understand the role of war in social change, they grasp the importance of material culture and its techniques of the body, and they identify the compromise between “colonised elites” and “metropolitan bourgeoisie” underlying colonisation and decolonisation. However, Fanon does not stray away from an essentialist and ahistorical apprehension of the colonial situation, as well as of a rather poor vision of social subalternity.
