Two rather different theories of canon formation and sustenance in cultural memory are investigated in this article : The cultural-history-oriented study Das kulturelle Gedächtnis by the German egyptologist Jan Assmann, and Les Règles de l’art by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, an inquiry into the rules of modern art. As our main focus is the concept of canonical restraint, we are able to compare the works of Assmann and Bourdieu. In the second part, the concepts of both authors are subjected to a clarifying analysis by means of Walter Benjamin’s term of “dialectics at a standstill”.
