De la conférence de Rye, à l’automne 1944, au congrès de Tokyo de la Chambre de Commerce internationale – International Chamber of Commerce (CCI-ICC), en 1955, l’article vise à mettre en évidence le rôle majeur joué par l’industriel Ernest Mercier (1878-1955) dans l’affirmation des milieux d’affaires français aux États-Unis. Délégué par le Gouvernement provisoire de la République française à la conférence des hommes d’affaires de Rye, Mercier représente à la fois les intérêts de la République restaurée et ceux des patrons français dont il est l’élu. Dans un second temps, l’article revient sur la longue amitié et les relations entre Ernest Mercier et Philippe Cotnareanu. Devenu Philip Cortney (1895-1971), ce patron américain influent met en œuvre un soft power en faveur de la France et agit de concert avec Ernest Mercier au sein des instances dirigeantes de la CCI-ICC.

Ernest Mercier – Philip Cortney, two supporters of French Business interests and influence in the United States during the Post WWII DecadeThis paper aims to highlight the key role played by the French industrialist Ernest Mercier (1878-1955) in the affirmation of French interests in the United States, from the Rye Conference, in the fall of 1944, to the Tokyo Congress of the International Chamber of Commerce – Chambre de Commerce internationale (ICC-CCI), in 1955. Mercier was delegated by the new Gouvernement provisoire de la République française to participate in the Rye Businessmen’s Conference, where he represented and promoted both the interests of the restored French Republic and those of French businessmen. In a second part, the article looks back at the long friendship and relations between Ernest Mercier and Philippe Cotnareanu. The latter, an influential businessman, had taken on the name Philip Cortney (1895-1971) and obtained American citizenship. He strove to implement soft power tools in favor of France in the USA and intervened, along with Ernest Mercier, in the governing bodies of the ICC-CCI.
