Before the Emma Eckstein case, Sigmund Freud’s various health problems constituted the main subject of dispute between Freud and Wilhelm Flies, the latter effectively intent on curing his friend by means of his treatment of nasal reflex neurosis. Linking certain pre-psychoanalytic texts with their correspondence shows not only that Freud based his theorization of the anxiety neurosis on his own “case”, but that the anxiety neurosis, with its specific health disorders, became a means of extricating himself from the therapy of Fleiss.
