Dans ce portrait d’Ernest-Charles Babut (1875-1916) complété par une bibliographie de ses œuvres, Sylvain J. G. Sanchez* rend hommage à un historien protestant nîmois de la Belle Époque, emporté dans la tempête de la Grande Guerre. Consacrée à la littérature hérésiologique et hagiographique du christianisme antique, l’œuvre presque oubliée de Babut apparaît comme une contribution notable aux débats qui opposent la France républicaine et la France catholique dans les années qui précèdent immédiatement la guerre. Une controverse historiographique entre son mentor Charles-Victor Langlois et son ancien condisciple Charles Péguy témoigne de son engagement dans ces débats auxquels il prend part à la fois comme protestant et comme républicain.

In this portrait of Ernest-Charles Babut (1875-1916) completed with a bibliography of his works, Sylvain J. G. Sanchez pays tribute to a French Protestant historian of the Belle Époque who prematurely died on the battlefield. Focusing on Ancient Christian heresiology and hagiography, Babut’s almost forgotten work appears to be a noteworthy contribution to the debates that opposed Catholics and Republicans in the years immediately preceding World War I.
