Le 11 août 2019 mourait André Martel, laissant l’histoire militaire orpheline. Professeur à l’université de Montpellier et à l’ iep d’Aix-en-Provence, fondateur du Centre d’histoire militaire de Montpellier, il a su insuffler un nouvel élan à la discipline, appréhendée comme une histoire globale, jetant les bases d’approches pluridisciplinaires largement adoptées aujourd’hui, sans jamais transiger avec le travail d’archives. Colonel de réserve, son savoir scientifique et son expérience militaire ont fait de ses analyses une rare synthèse de ces deux cultures.

On 11 August 2019, André Martel died, leaving military history orphaned. Professor at the University of Montpellier and IEP Aix-en-Provence, founder of the Montpellier Military History Centre ( Centre d’Histoire Militaire), he breathed new life into the discipline, which he saw as a global history, laying the foundation for the multi-disciplinary approaches widely adopted today, without ever compromising on the hard work of archive research. A reserve corps colonel, his scientific knowledge and his military experience combined to make his analyses a rare synthesis of these two cultures.
