Résumé En

This paper aims to discuss the importance of Camilla in Aeneid 11. The use of a reading key underlining the conflict, in this fictive character, between the deep sexual identity and the gender that has been imposed to her since her childhood, may offer an interesting perspective on the whole gest of Camilla. Thus, the strange circumstances of her death can be read as a thematization of the deadly answer to this inner conflict. But as the poet recognizes in Camilla a sort of memorial rebirth when she dies, he pays his tribute to his heroine by giving her access to epic memory.
