Based on a fresh reading of The School and Society, a seminal book in philosophy of education developed by American philosopher John Dewey, the aim of this paper is to study how art can play an educational, and emancipatory role within a philosophy often characterized by its insistence on the place of science rather than on the place of artistic approaches. Relying on the various examples provided by this book, the challenge consists in making visible the various possible dimensions of art in the educational task, as well as underlining the singularity of the pragmatist conception of aesthetics, its constant transaction with experience. With such a diachronic detour, this study reminds us that, in societies where experience is threatened more than ever, the school must be a laboratory as much as a workshop.
