This article deals with the most crucial causes and the most important features of financial deregulation in the United Kingdom. The suppression of exchange Controls in the summer of 1979 revealed how ill-adapted the London Stock Exchange was to the growing internationalisation of financial activities. The deregulation process culminated on October 27, 1986. The changes, which became known as Big Bang, included the abolition of fixed commissions, the abolition of the distinction between jobbers and brokers, and the opening up of the gilt-edged securities market by the Bank of England. A further aspect of deregulation was the introduction of sophisticated electronic dealing Systems for securities.
