La laïcité en France a désormais pour mission de pacifier les relations entre l’État, l’islam et la société, comme elle a eu naguère à le faire pour l’Église catholique. Il serait pourtant réducteur de la limiter à la gestion des cultes. Plus que la reconnaissance d’un droit – la liberté de conscience – c’est aussi une préférence pour l’unité civique. Homme d’État, théologien, guide spirituel, historien, essayiste et anthropologue livrent ici leurs points de vue sur la question.

Secularism in France now has the mission of pacifying the relations between the State, Islam and society, as it had once done for the Catholic Church. It would be simplistic, however, to limit it to the supervision of cults. More than the recognition of a right – freedom of conscience – it is also a partiality for civic unity.
