Impediments to Technological Innovation in Coinage Manufacturing (West, Far East, 16th-20th Century). There are two main ways of manufacturing coinage : striking coins (Western tradition) and casting them (Oriental tradition). These two techniques evolved along with technological progress, particularly in the sixteenth century in Europe and in the nineteenth century in Asia. One might think that this progress was greeted with interest but that is not the case. The powers, monetary in one case, political in the second, introduced impediments, delaying considerably the adoption of the novelties. Several reasons explain these phenomena : sociological, economic and political.

Il existe deux grandes façons de fabriquer des monnaies, la frappe (tradition occidentale) et la fonte (tradition orientale). Ces deux techniques ont évolué au fil des améliorations technologiques, particulièrement au XVIe siècle en Europe et au XIXe siècle en Asie. On pourrait penser que ces progrès ont été accueillis avec intérêt mais il n’en est rien. Les pouvoirs, monétaires dans un cas, politiques dans le second, ont freiné des quatre fers, retardant considérablement l’adoption des nouveautés. Plusieurs raisons expliquent ces phénomènes : sociologiques, économiques et politiques.
