It is a peculiar experience to write under the constraint of the most rigorous of playwrights. Ibsen forces his translator to appropriate the form of an Absence, to walk again the path of a perfectly arranged language laid out like a theorem. Ibsen doesn’t write the way one speaks in day-to-day life. His theatre helps him not to make life but to represent it. Fantasy is always interwoven with ordinary everyday life. And for his characters the partition between madness and reason is very thin. As a theatre of dissimulation it forces the translator to exalt the tension between what is hidden and what shows itself, between the said and the unsaid, real and dream. The clarity of his language is an antagonistic clarity.
