Dans la première partie de notre étude ( L’Année balzacienne 2018), nous interrogions les modalités d’une présence problématique d’un héros entrevu et comme frappé d’impuissance jusqu’à son effacement final et symbolique. Il nous faut à présent explorer les enjeux de cette dissolution à l’aune des tensions significatives entre le monde sublimé de la Suisse et de l’Italie, patrie de l’Idéal et l’âpre Province du Réel bisontin qui affectent le personnage et les figures féminines qui lui sont attachées. Les rapports de ces personnages à ces mondes opposés, tant en termes d’appartenance que sous l’angle du désir, offrent, dans leur complexité et leur ambivalence – parallélismes, croisement, inversions – de riches interprétations.

In the first part of our study (L’Année balzacienne 2018) we looked at the various manifestations of a hero whose problematic presence was but glimpsed and virtually emasculated before being finally and symbolically eliminated. In this second article, we need to explore what this elimination means in terms of the significant tensions between, on the one hand, the sublimated world of Switzerland and Italy, realm of the ideal, and, on the other hand, the roughhewn Province of the Real of Besançon – tensions which bear on the protagonist and the women who are attached to him. The relations between the characters and these opposing worlds, both in terms of belonging and in terms of desire, are redolent with richly complex and ambivalent meanings – in the form of parallels, interconnections and reversals.
