Philip Nord, « Un judaïsme christianisé ? La religion dans La Nuit d’Elie Wiesel et Le Dernier des Justes d’André Schwarz-Bart », Archives Juives, ID : 10670/1.73r83q
A Christianized Judaism? Religion in Elie Wiesel’s Night and André Schwarz-Bart’s The Last of the Just There were readers, both Jewish and Christian, who read Wiesel’s Night and Schwarz-Bart’s The Last of the Just when they first appeared as texts that Christianized the Holocaust. That François Mauriac prefaced Night and Paul Flamand’s Le Seuil published The Last of the Just would seem to provide evidence for this line of interpretation. I argue instead that the two books were works of dialogue, designed to challenge the Christian conscience even as they enabled a distinct (and religious or religiously inflected) Jewish voice to be heard.
