The emergence of the profession of child psychoanalyst is studied using the example of the Office médico-pédagogique vaudois, which, since its foundation in 1942, has employed assistant psychologists to carry out psychological examinations by means of tests and to carry out psychotherapeutic follow-up. The training and career paths of these professionals are essentially traced from the institutional archives of the Office. The vast majority are women, university graduates with experience. Their psychological training is often secondary and completed by a didactic psychoanalysis. If a minority of them reach the civil service and others are called as auxiliaries, their involvement within the Office varies, but all of them show autonomy in their work. Their status and remuneration are defended by the head doctor, who considers them essential to the running of the consultation. They contributed to the development of medical-psychological-pedagogical networks on a national and international scale, even though from the 1950s onwards the debate on lay analysis called their status into question.
