"The Idealization of Others : divine women in ideological re/presentation in ancient societies." In patriarchal societies, from the earliest ones in the ancient world, the following paradox becomes apparent : in the ideological and religious discourse – that is, in the ideal representation of reality – their female half is deprived of its legitimate social role and reduced to a reassuring subaltern and secondary construct and pictured, above all, as the very embodiment of the other ; yet this otherness is indispensable to describe in positive terms the normative male subject within an androcentric conception of reality. This implies a perversion by which the other is not considered in his/ her specificity (imitable and subject to criticism) and his/ her identity is at once negated and appropriated.
