L’Inde face au Covid : pandémie, État, société, géopolitique

Alors que le gouvernement nationaliste de Narendra Modi croyait avoir vaincu le Covid et lançait, début 2021, une diplomatie du vaccin faisant de l’Inde « la pharmacie du monde », une deuxième vague meurtrière s’est abattue sur le pays quelques mois plus tard, le chiffre officiel des décès, le troisième au monde après États-Unis et Brésil, étant sans doute fortement sous-évalué. Après avoir porté attention aux stratégies suivies lors des deux vagues de la pandémie, et aux aléas de la campagne de vaccination, on s’attachera ensuite à évaluer les conséquences économiques, sociales et politiques de la crise, et ses effets possibles sur la géopolitique indienne.

While the nationalist government of Narendra Modi, confident that it had vanquished the Covid, launched early 2021 a vaccine diplomacy swing presenting India as the « world pharmacy », a tragic second wave hit the country a few months later. The official Covid deaths data ranks India third globally, after the U.S. and Brazil, but is probably greatly under-evaluated. After paying attention to the strategies followed during the two waves of the pandemic, and to the hazards of the vaccination campaign, we shall attempt to assess the economic, societal and political consequences of the crisis, and its possible impact on the geopolitics of India.
