Résumé En

After a brief description of the vicissitudes of the Province of Macedonia Secunda, the author makes a point of presenting the state of the research on Stobi, in all likelihood the capital and the only city of the province that has been the object of considerable systematic excavation. The history of the town and that of its monuments appears to have been strongly marked by the visit of Theodosius in 388, and later by the foundation of Justiniana Prima and the author wonders whether the latter was not the direct cause of the decline of Stobi. At the beginning of the 4th century the town still offered a widely varied typology : large residences with a central courtyard, modest houses, stalls and workshops, baths, public fountains; but above all, churches, one of which, the central basilica, took the place of the synagogue at the beginning of the 5th century. A detailed study of the mosaics of the episcopal basilica has made it possible to date the town's decline.
