The Austrian playwright Elfriede Jelinek won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004. The eroticism and violence that she uses in her work have appalled many people and she is considered to be a controversial artist. What role does the memory of the Holocaust play in her writing? Is her work considered scandalous because of its content or its form? This article attempts to answer these questions by studying her most important works.
