Abilio y el ciclónEmpecé a leer la obra de Abilio Estévez por El navegante dormido y quedé deslumbrada por la tensión poética de la escritura y la refinada complejidad de la organización narrativa. En el centro del texto está la trágica inminencia de un ciclón, el que azotó la isla de Cuba el 14 de octubre de 1977, y por eso, para mí, Abilio está para siempre vinculado a este elemento, tan terriblemente presente en la vida de los cubanos, y a la vez totalmente mítico y fantasmagórico. A pocas páginas de cerrarse la novela, aparece en toda su dimensión, la significación simbólica del ciclón.Abilio and the hurricaneMy first encounter with Abilio Estévez’s work was the reading of El navegante dormido and I felt dazzled by the poetic tension of the writing and the sophisticated complexity of the narrative structure. The novel’s dramatic tension is underpinned by the imminent arrival of a violent hurricane, the one that devastated Cuba on October 14th in 1977, and since then, for me Abilio is closely related to this phenomenon, terribly familiar in the Cubans’ everyday life and at the same time completely mythical and phantasmagorical. A few pages before the dénouement, the symbolical meaning of the hurricane is revealed to the reader.
