According to the theory of regulation, money is a social institution which finds its place in basic economic relationships. This differs from orthodox (neo-classical) economics which separates money from "real" activities and relative prices. However, the contradictory features of commodity circulation and of money capital are much better understood when the marxist notion of money as "the general equivalent" is presented.
