Habiter un territoire en réseau, pêcheurs et poissons dans l’archipel de Nouvelle-Calédonie

En Nouvelle-Calédonie, habiter le territoire, c’est être en lien avec lui et assurer le maintien de liens entre les habitants de l’archipel. Les réseaux marquants les liens entre les îles sont nombreux et touchent les dimensions sociales, culturelles, coutumières, économiques. Ces réseaux s’inscrivent sur tout le territoire, sur terre comme en mer. Plusieurs projets de recherche récents s’intéressant à la pêche et aux pêcheurs en Nouvelle-Calédonie permettent de rendre compte du rôle actuel des pêcheurs dans la création et l’entretien de ces liens archipélagiques. À partir d’entretiens menés sur les îles Loyauté, les îles Belep, les îles du Grand Lagon Sud ainsi qu’en Grande Terre et en mobilisant des données spatialisées, nous proposons une lecture originale du monde de la pêche. Ces mobilités et flux que les pêcheurs animent en Nouvelle-Calédonie permettent de mieux appréhender les réseaux qui lient les lieux de l’archipel calédonien. Nous rendons ainsi compte d’une part du rôle des pêcheurs kanak et non-kanak dans l’entretien des liens entre les îles et d’autre part de l’intrication particulière des enjeux coutumiers, sociaux et économiques dans ces dynamiques.

In New Caledonia, to be living in the territory, to dwell in it, is to be in connection with it and to ensure the continuation of links between the inhabitants of the archipelago. There are many networks that reflect the links between the islands and concern social, cultural, customary, economic and symbolic dimensionsThese networks are present throughout the territory, both on land and at sea. Several recent research projects on fishing and fishers in New Caledonia provide an understanding of the current role of fishers in the creation and the perpetuation of these archipelagic links. Based on interviews conducted on the Loyalty Islands, the Belep Islands, the islands of the Grand Lagoon Sud and the Grande Terre, and using spatialised data, we propose an original reading of the fishing world, of the mobilities and flows that fishermen carry out in New Caledonia, in order to understand the networks that link the places of the New Caledonian archipelago. In this way, we examine the role of Kanak and non-Kanak fishers in sustaining the links between the islands and the particular intertwining of customary, social and economic issues in these dynamics.
