My purpose is to analyse how Adorno’s reflections on the relation between subject and object stem from a confrontation between Kant and Hegel, where both philosophers come under an immanent critical scrutiny and where the one appears as the truth of the other, Kant or Hegel being deemed superior depending on the issue at stake. On the one hand, it is a matter of describing how that confrontation developed in the Lectures on Kant and Hegel, in the Three Studies on Hegel, in Negative Dialectics and in the “Subject-Object” essay; on the other hand, of measuring the structuring feature of the Kant-Hegel confrontation in many fundamental themes of Adornian thought, esp. the primacy of the object. The first part of the article focuses on the Hegelian theme of the reciprocal mediation of subject and object, whereas in the second part it is described how the primacy of the object can be apprehended both from Kant and Hegel. At last, Hegelian themes appear as more structuring when Adorno exhibits the problems of the role of experience in knowledge and the epistemological significance of the subject-object dialectics.
