Fidelia Ibekwe, « The critical race-theoretic turn in library and information science », HALSHS : archive ouverte en Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société, ID : 10.2426/aibstudi-13854
In the wake of the George Floyd racist murder, many scientific fields have embarkedon a critical self-examination of their legacy towards the current levels of systemic orimplicit racism. There is now a consensus that it does not suffice to say that one orone’s institution is not racist. One needs to be actively ‘anti-racist’ by aligning one’spolicies, institutional procedures and cultures on clear anti-racism values and ethos. Following the popular saying that «charity begins at home», this paper will reviewthe current state of the critical race-theoretic current that is sweeping across scientific disciplines in order to take stock of how Library and Information Science (LIS henceforth) is engaging with it. It will also dwell on the role that education plays in combating racial prejudice and all forms of injustices. It will end with some thoughts about the relevance of LIS regarding current major societal issues.
