"The social and political context of the Southern Andes region during the Middle Horizon is characterized by at least two co-existing metallurgical traditions. While the fi rst altiplano tradition is strongly associated with the Tiwanaku state, the second one, located in northwestern Argentina, is represented by the Aguada metal production. During this period, a signifi cant increase in the quantity of metal objects took place in the San Pedro de Atacama oases. Th ese objects are found in burial contexts from the Middle Horizon, frequently associated with hallucinogenic paraphernalia , including snuff trays with Tiwanaku iconography, ceramics and textiles with altiplano affi liations. Prior studies of metal production in San Pedro de Atacama focused on the foreign origin of the metal goods, or proposed a local industry without suffi cient empirical support. In the present work we provide preliminary results obtained from elementary analysis (ICP-AES techniques) on metal objects belonging to the Middle Horizon collections conserved in the Museo R.P. Gustavo Le Paige, San Pedro de Atacama. We hope that this modest contribution will help in clarifying the origin and signifi cance of pre-hispanic metal production in the San Pedro de Atacama oases."
