Abstract En

Pankararu Indians (State of Pernambuco, Northeast region of Brazil) have initiated during the 1930s a process of formalization of their indigenous identity. To please the Indigenous Protection Service (SPI, the official tutelary body of indigenous peoples in Brazil), they undertook major social, political, ritual and cosmic changes. A particular organization of each one of these-interdependent-elements has been developed. Even so, it did not last long and reigns today, inside the pankararu village, an incessant reconsideration of the established power. This paper is mainly concerned with the cosmic plane. The "traditional" pantheon is considered fixed. However, new invisible entities regularly integrate it. Unable to prevent or even halt this increase, "traditional" local authorities produce speeches targeting denying the veracity of an invisible entity or the capacities of a ritual specialist. The goal here is to analyze this new order, this mutual misunderstanding caused by the multiplicity of sources enunciating "truth".
