Collective memory in France concerning the Algerian War of Independence has come into the open and found its place only in the opening years of the 21st century. This case study of a war memorial for the Vienne département, erected in Poitiers in 2007, can shed light on differing perspectives. Apart from the aesthetics of the monument and its meaning, the study shows the negotiations that were necessary both before and after its inauguration, due particularly to the confrontation between the initiators (who wanted to include everyone concerned) and the harki veterans (who did not want to be included). The article analyses the way the monument commemorates the war, in line with similar memorials to the wars of the 20th century.
