Taiwan et la question nationale

L’ascension de la Chine, la démocratisation de Taiwan, et la mise en contact des deux rives ont introduit de nouveaux paramètres dans la question nationale à Taiwan, c’est-à-dire dans la définition de la communauté politique imaginée sur l’île et la détermination de son futur. Ce travail montre que la capacité des acteurs étatiques à déterminer le futur de Taiwan en est amoindrie, leur pouvoir étant dilué dans un réseau d’interdépendances de densité croissante. Mais il n’y a pas statu quo. La communauté politique taiwanaise est en mouvement, sur une trajectoire non linéaire, résultante de la réintroduction de conceptions divergentes de la nation, de l’identité et des rapports Taiwan-Chine. Son analyse, grâce à un questionnaire distribué dans douze universités et portant sur les représentations et comportements politiques des étudiants, montre que l’affirmation d’une conscience nationale taiwanaise ne s’accompagne pas de crispations nationalistes et que pour cette génération, l’horizon politique reste ouvert. China’s rise, Taiwan’s democratisation and the close relationship between the two sides of the Strait have brought forward new parameters in the national question in Taiwan, namely, in the definition of the political community imagined on the island, and in the determination of its future. This work demonstrates that the ability of the state actors to define Taiwan’s future is indeed weakened by their entanglement into an increasingly dense net of interdependencies. However, there is no status quo. The Taiwanese political community is moving forward on a non-linear trajectory, which results from the coming back of diverging conceptions of the nation, identity and the Taiwan-China relationship. Our analysis, based on a questionnaire we distributed in twelve universities, concerning student political perceptions and behaviours, shows that the strengthening of a Taiwanese national consciousness does not imply nationalist tensing and that, for this generation, the political horizon remains unblocked.
