Roma Hooge et al., « The unification of a diminishing class of rural farm workers… or land grabs by estates (South India)? », Études rurales, ID : 10670/1.cgncco
While the average size of farms in India continues to decrease, there are large farms with high land productivity, known locally as “estates”, throughout Karnataka, our study area. Does this represent the beginning of a “unification” of farming or even of “agricultural firms”? After offering an overview of the region’s environment and rural farm workers, the article identifies that an “estate” is generally based on irrigated agroforestry and owned by individuals outside the region. Their records on water usage and employment present significant losses, and the situation could even be described as a (relative) grab of land and water. Therefore, the development of these estates is not a sustainable solution to the structural problems in rural India.
