Céline Leglaive-Perani, « Donner au féminin : Juives philanthropes en France (1830-1930) », Archives Juives, ID : 10670/1.chyvgz
This article studies the motivations of Jewish women philanthropists in France during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Such motivations reveal a socialization strategy: by imitating the traditional mores of women from the aristocracy and the haute bourgeoisie, Jewish women sought to develop their social networks and integrate higher socio-economic circles. Jewish women also participated in philanthropy for reasons that are associated with their identities as Jews and as members of the larger society: by giving to the French without distinction of religion, they affirmed their position as patriots who were concerned about the well-being of their fellow citizens. Like their male counterparts, Jewish women perceived their generosity as a form of recognition for France, their emancipator.
